The Apple App Store is the exclusive consumer distribution channel for native apps on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro, with a companion Mac App Store for macOS. Developers join the Apple Developer Program, build against Apple's SDKs (Swift/SwiftUI, UIKit), and submit binaries through App Store Connect, where Apple's App Review team evaluates every release for guideline, privacy, and security compliance. Because iOS does not permit general sideloading outside the EU, App Store presence is effectively mandatory to reach Apple's consumer base.
Monetization runs through Apple's in-app purchase and subscription system, with Apple acting as Merchant of Record and handling tax and payout globally. Commission is 30% by default, dropping to 15% for developers in the Small Business Program (under $1M/year) and for long-lived subscriptions. For most integrations the auth that matters is at the app level, not the store: apps authenticate users via Sign in with Apple or OAuth2 against their own services, while the strict human-in-the-loop review makes Apple one of the more rigorous distribution surfaces.
