Extensions & plugins app marketplaces

Extensions and plugins install into a host runtime — a browser, an IDE, or a package registry — and run in its context: Chrome/Edge/Firefox/Safari extensions, VS Code and JetBrains plugins, or npm and Docker Hub packages. They reach end users and developers directly rather than through a business admin.

The build model is the host’s extension platform (Manifest V3 for browsers, the editor’s plugin API, or a package spec), and auth for the store itself is often minimal — many extensions call their own backend via OAuth only when they need identity. Review centers on permissions and data handling; the tradeoff for that scrutiny is enormous, low-friction distribution.
